"ST. LOUIS ICON MAX J. STARKLOFF TO BE FEATURED ON NPR'S STORYCORPS THIS FRIDAY
Colleen Starkloff tells the story of the late Max Starkloff: their marriage, their mission.
Colleen Kelly Starkloff, wife of the late disability rights leader, Max J. Starkloff, will be featured on National Public Radio's StoryCorps this Friday, January 16, 2015. The 3 minute segment, recorded with her daughter, Meaghan Starkloff Breitenstein, focuses her marriage to Max, a St. Louis icon and pioneer in the national disability rights movement. The segment will be played twice throughout the program Morning Edition, between 5:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. CST. Listeners can tune in on St. Louis Public Radio, KWMU 90.7 or online at http://news.stlpublicradio.org. The StoryCorps segment can be heard at approximately 5:20 a.m. and again at 7:20 a.m. CST.
"I am overjoyed that my husband's story will be brought to a national audience through StoryCorps," says Colleen Starkloff. "I am dedicated to telling his story and keeping his dream of full emancipation of people with disabilities alive"
Colleen Kelly Starkloff is currently the Co-director of the Starkloff Disability Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world that is more welcoming to people with disabilities. She founded the organization with Max in 2003, and carries on their mission today. The Institute's flagship program, The Next Big Step, empowers people with disabilities to become highly competitive jobseekers and teaches employers how to welcome them into their workforce. A new book about Starkloff, "Max Starkloff and the Fight for Disability Rights", is available at the Missouri History Museum and on Amazon."
